It’s Hop tu Naa, you turnip!

Free Hop tu Naa bags and reusable window stickers at Pink Seaweed Gallery in Ramsey, supported by Culture Vannin. Get ya moots out!

Our Hop tu Naa bags and window stickers have arrived at Pink Seaweed.

Supported by Culture Vannin, this little project is a playful way to get more families celebrating Hop tu Naa and keep a wonderfully Manx tradition going.

Get ya moots out!

Long before plastic pumpkins and supermarket Halloween aisles, people on the Isle of Man were marking the turn of the year with their own traditions.

The familiar turnip lantern, or “moot”, is part of that story, although the celebration itself is older than the lantern-carving custom.

Culture Vannin describes Hop tu Naa as the island’s oldest continuously existing tradition. Its origins lie in the old Celtic celebration of the end of summer and the beginning of winter, known in Manx as Sauin.

Hop tu Naa’s origins predate modern Halloween and here on the island, we have kept our own songs, stories and ways of celebrating, passed between generations.

A turnip in the window

The window stickers are reusable clings for homes and businesses to display in their windows or glass doors. They’re a simple signal: we’re celebrating Hop tu Naa here, so bring us a song!

The matching tote bags give children something to carry their treats in.

Both are free, thanks to support from Culture Vannin.

Pop in to collect yours free while stocks last, put your turnip in the window and get practising.
