Why seeing art in real life, asking questions and buying through an independent gallery still matters.

<h2>You can see the real thing</h2>

<p>Buying art online can be brilliant. I have an online shop too, so I am not going to pretend the internet is the enemy.</p>

<p>But art is difficult to squash into a photograph. Screens flatten texture, muddle scale and do strange things to colour. A tiny piece can look huge. A painting with loads of depth can look like a flat rectangle.</p>

<p>In a gallery you can stand in front of it, move around it and see what happens when the light changes. Sometimes the piece you ignored online is the one you cannot stop looking at in person.</p>

<h2>You can ask daft questions</h2>

<p>There are no daft questions, obviously, but people often worry they need to know the right words before talking about art.</p>

<p>Ask what it is made from. Ask who the artist is. Ask whether it needs a frame or if you can hang it in a bathroom. We know the people behind the work and can usually tell you the story without reading it from a product listing.</p>

<h2>Somebody has chosen what is there</h2>

<p>Pink Seaweed is curated, but not in a velvet-rope sort of way. I choose work because it is well made, original and right for the space. New artists can sit next to established ones. A tiny print can sit near a serious painting. Good work is good work.</p>

<p>The artists do not pay to get through the door. When something sells, the artist receives 70% and the gallery takes 30%. That keeps the artist paid and the gallery open.</p>

<h2>You are buying from real people</h2>

<p>When you buy from an independent gallery, the money does not disappear into a giant platform. It pays the artist and keeps a physical creative space on the high street.</p>

<p>You also go home knowing who made the thing on your wall, shelf or body. That matters.</p>
